Travel Planning with Disabilities; How the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower can help

Everyone has the right to travel and deserve to experience the joy it brings, and one of the biggest outcomes of the sunflower lanyard is making travel easier for people with hidden disabilities. There are now 240 airports across 30 countries and 18 airlines who have joined the cause.

Globally 1 in 6 of us live with a disability, that’s around 1.3 billion people. Many disabilities have non-visible conditions, or a combination of visible and non-visible conditions. Hidden disabilities can be temporary, situational or permanent. They can include conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, chronic pain, sleep disorders and respiratory diseases. They can also be neurological, cognitive and neurodevelopmental, as well as being physical, visual and auditory. They also include sensory and processing difficulties.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple tool for your or a loved one to voluntarily share that you have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent, and that you or they may need a little assistance, understanding or more time to complete a task or get to where you are going. Essentially, they make the invisible visible. You don’t need to explain your disability, the trained staff at participating airports and on participating airlines will simply ask how they can support you. You also don’t need to disclose the details of your disability to get the sunflower lanyard.
