Toilet training can be daunting enough as it is, and regardless how well it’s going or how far into it you are, tackling the first nappy free trip might be playing on your mind. Don’t worry though, I’ve got some tips and suggestions that may help you prepare for your family holiday and maybe ease your mind about the toilet training side of things.
Minimise fluid intake
It probably goes without saying, but be mindful of how much your child is drinking, if you can minimise their intake it will help. Use a transparent cup or bottle so you can see how much they are drinking. If they have just downed half a bottle, they will need the toilet sooner than later and they will probably need to go rather quickly, so be prepared.
Know where the toilets are
When you get to the airport, theme park, or anywhere you are visiting in your travels make it your mission to get an idea of where the toilets are located as soon as you arrive, it makes it that much easier when you’re doing the mad dash to one.
Plan toilet breaks
If you’re driving, plan regular toilet stops every couple of hours. The same goes before boarding the plane, take them to the toilet as close to boarding time as you can. When you are out sightseeing, as you pass a toilet, just check to see if they need to go. There is so much exciting stuff going on when you’re away from home so they are more likely to miss their body telling them they need to go.

Take the potty with you
If you are using a potty or toilet training seat, take it with you. It will make your little one feel more at ease using the toilet if they have their potty or seat with them.
Toilet training mats
Carry a packet of toilet training mats, like the small ones you get for pet toilet training. These are great for lining the car seat or popping under them on the plane, train or bus. Brolly sheets also do a reusable car seat protector.
Toilet training sheets
You might be worried about your little one wetting the bed while you are away, if you aren’t using night time nappies, you could take a toilet training sheet like Brolly sheet or Spewy sheet, or Conni Bed Mat. Kmart even have a cheap option. There’re also few different styles available so have a shop around to find one you like. They make dealing with the accident in the middle of the night a bit easier and quicker, plus the sheets underneath will still be dry to hopefully get you through until morning.
Spare Clothes
Keep a couple of changes of clothes and some wipes handy while travelling, that way you don’t need to go rummaging if an accident occurs.
The important thing to remember is don’t stress if an accident happens, your little one is learning and they won’t be the first and they won’t be the last. Just make sure you tell the flight attendants, cleaners or hotel staff, they will be happy to help get it cleaned up.
